Caramelized Onion & Crispy Prosciutto Pizza

This pizza is packed with sweet & savory flavors! Crispy prosciutto, caramelized onions layered onto of dough and melty cheese. This is the homemade pizza you make when you are having people over!

This is the ONE and only homemade pizza recipe that I make when I am craving pizza. Anyone who has tried it says it is the best pizza they have ever had and asks me for the recipe. It is easy to make, requires little ingredients and so worth caramelizing those onions for. The two kinds of cheese I use adds a lot of flavor because lets be real although mozzarella cheese is a pizza must, it lacks flavor. Once you make this once you will be referring back to it time and time again to make- whether it is for a party, a Friday night, game day or the girls are coming over. Impress anyone with this homemade pizza recipe! It is really easy to make yourself and is way more budget friendly than ordering out 🍕🧀

Ingredients for THE BEST PIZZA!!

This homemade pizza requires only a few ingredients and is so flavorful! It is one of those pizza recipes that you will dream about. It’s the perfect pizza to make when hosting people over. It also makes for the perfect appetizer- just cut into smaller pieces and serve for parties or game day snacks 🍕

Gather the ingredients below and this will take you under 20 minutes to make in total!

  • pizza dough (homemade or store-bought)

  • yellow or sweet onion

  • prosciutto

  • mozzarella cheese

  • gruyere cheese

  • olive oil

  • dried oregano or basil

  • flour (only needed if the dough is a bit sticky)

  • fresh thyme (garnish)

The base of this pizza is a white pizza and I would keep it that way for optimal flavors of the onions and prosciutto to come out. My husband always asks me “why don’t you add tomato sauce on this one” and honestly because it doesn’t need it. It is SO flavorful as a white based pizza. Once I have my dough spread out =, I add on a bit of olive oil and dried oregano and that is the base of this pizza. EASY PEASY!

Ingredients:

Pizza dough- you can make your own but I find it way easier to buy it from the store. Often I will buy it frozen (yes they sell frozen pizza dough!) and I will keep some in the freezer, that way it is there when I want to make one.

Gruyere cheese- this cheese is a French alpine cheese that is mild, with rich fruity and nutty flavors. It is my secret ingredient to make any dish more flavorful especially this pizza! It is a must for this pizza- don’t skip out on this one, trust me!

Onion- the best onions to caramelize are yellow or sweet onions- try to get one of these from the grocery store. The trick is to cook them low and slow and YES, you can make these in advanced

Prosciutto- but not just any prosciutto… crispy prosciutto! It makes a HUGE difference in flavor when you bake this charcuterie in the oven. It crisps up beautifully making it to the perfect addition to add onto pizza for a salty bite.

Caramelized Onion & Crispy Prosciutto Pizza

This pizza is packed with sweet & savory flavors! Crispy prosciutto, caramelized onions layered onto of dough and melty cheese. This is the homemade pizza you make when you are having people over!

Ingredients

  • 1 pizza dough (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1-2 yellow or sweet onions (depending on how big they are)
  • 3 oz prosciutto
  • 10 oz mozzarella cheese
  • 10 oz gruyere cheese
  • 5 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano or basil
  • flour (only needed if the dough is a bit sticky)
  • fresh thyme (garnish)

Instructions

Caramelized Onions
  1. Cut your onion in half and into thin slices
  2. In a pan on medium heat, add a tbsp of olive oil and when the pan is hot add in your onions
  3. Cook your onions for 40 minutes of medium heat stirring every few minutes
  4. The trick is to cook these low and slow for the best results
  5. If the pant gets a bit brown, add in a bit of water and mix the onions around (this will help them caramelize)
  6. In the last 5 minutes, add a bit of salt on the onions
  7. If you make these ahead of time, store in an airtight container in the fridge or use right away on the pizza
Crispy Prosciutto
  1. Heat oven to 400 F
  2. On a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, add on slices on prosciutto in a single layer and not touching one another
  3. Bake the prosciutto for 7-8 minutes until crispy
  4. Take out of the oven and let it sit for 5 minutes
  5. if you make this ahead of time, store in a plastic bag in the fridge or use it right away
Pizza
  1. Heat oven to 400 F and add a bit of olive oil to a baking sheet (mine is 21" x 15")
  2. Take your pizza dough and stretch it on the baking sheet until it's thinly spread out and takes up the area of the baking sheet. This takes a bit of hand work and time to get it to stay, be patient. I like to add a bit of flour if its too sticky and my trick is to grab the edges of the pizza dough and tuck them under the pan edges for a few minutes, release to make them stay in the corners.
  3. After the pizza dough is stretched out to your likeness, add on 1-2tbsp of olive oil on the dough and sprinkle on some dried oregano or basil
  4. Add on shredded mozzarella cheese and gruyere cheese (I like to spread my cheese out to the edges of the pizza dough, makes for a crispy cheesy crust. TRUST ME!! It is so good to have every inch covered in cheese)
  5. Then add on caramelized onions
  6. Crunch your crispy prosciutto up and sprinkle on the pizza next
  7. Add on some fresh thyme and then cook the pizza in the oven for 10-15 minutes (check the bottom of the pizza dough to see if it is done to your likeness)
  8. Out of the oven, let it cool for a few minutes and then cut and serve!

Notes

  • This pizza makes for great leftovers too! Just cut some leftover pieces and store in a airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days
