Easy Apple Crisp

This apple crisp recipe has been passed down in my family for a reason! It is the best apple crisp you will ever have. Soft caramelized apples topped with a brown sugar and butter crumble- it’s a recipe we look forward to all year. Best served for fall parties, Thanksgiving or Holiday parties.

My grandma Joan’s apple crisp is the best apple crisp you will ever have! I go to sleep dreaming of this dessert, that is how good it is. We look forward to enjoying it every Thanksgiving and Holiday get together. It just really is THAT good. I eat mine by itself but a lot of my family say it is best served with some vanilla ice cream.

Why this is the BEST apple crisp:

  • Apples – The apples you use matter! My grandma Joan always recommends using Macintosh apples. These apples have green/red skin and are super juicy & tart in flavor making them perfect for baking. If you can’t find these apples, then try Cortland or Empire apples

  • Easier than pie – We all love a good apple pie but homemade apple crisp is much easier and quicker to prepare, and tastes just as good (maybe even better IMO).

  • Crowd Pleaser – Top this easy apple crisp with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and it is irresistible! Double it and bake in a 9×13” pan, for a larger group. It is best served during the fall apple season, for Thanksgiving, Christmas, going into holiday hosting or really for any fall dinner party!

Ingredients for Grandma Joan’s Apple crisp

Find below everything that I included to make this apple crisp. I listed a few other apple varieties you could use but I highly recommend using Macintosh.

  • macintosh apples

  • salted butter

  • brown sugar

  • bisquick

  • cinnamon

Really this dessert comes together easily with not a lot of ingredients! It is all about using the right ingredients and following the directions carefully below that make this crips out of this world good!

Tips:

  1. Use Macintosh apples. TRUST ME on this!

  2. Bake this and then let it sit out of the oven for 15 minutes before serving- this will harden up the crisp topping a bit. If you serve right away, the apple crisp will still taste great but it will be a bit watery

  3. Use a 8x8 or 9x13 baking dish and be sure to lightly grease it

This is what your crumble should look like. If your crumble is not crumbling, add more bisquick to the creamed together butter and brown sugar mixture

Ingredients

  • 7-8 Macintosh apples
  • 1/2 cup softened salted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 cups bisquick
  • 2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Lightly grease a casserole dish with olive oil spray or butter
  2. Take the skin off your apples and cut into medium sides slices and place them in the casserole dish
  3. in a separate bowl, cream together 1/2 cup softened butter with 1 cup brown sugar (I use a fork to do this, it should a smooth consistency and mixed well together but not crumble YET)
  4. Add in 2 cups of bisquick to your butter and brown sugar mixture and combine and mix with your hands to make more of a crumble mixture
  5. Add more creamed brown sugar and butter if you'd like more of a crumble. Just be sure to cream both of these together first and THEN add in the bisquick to make it more crumbly. (Sometimes I double up my brown sugar & butter, cream them together and then add in more bisquick to double up on the crumble topping)
  6. Add cinnamon on your apples and then crumble on your crumble to your apples using your hands
  7. Cover with foil and bake later OR bake right away
  8. Set oven to 350 F and bake for 40 minutes (I usually bake mine covered with foil for 1/2 and then uncovered for the rest). Once a fork goes through the apples with ease it is done.
  9. IMPORTANT: after baking, let the apple crips sit for 15 minutes then serve
