Ingredients for Cheesy caramelized onion dip
What I love about this recipe is that is it easy to make. And if caramelizing onion scares you DO NOT WORRY OR STRESS, because I have a hack for you below on how to cook them quicker to PERFECTION. This is a warm and cozy appetizer that is perfect to serve up for Thanksgiving, Friendsgiving and going into the holiday parties and Christmas. Serve up as an appetizer or even aside dish for people to dip a crusty bread into.
Here are all the ingredients that you’ll need for this recipe:
- Vidalia Onions (or sweet onions)
- Butter + Sugar (for onions to caramelize)
- Mayonaise
- Sour Cream
- Jarlsberg cheese (freshly shredded)
- Tabasco
- Garlic
Cheese – Aunt Donna HIGHLY recommends you use Jarlsberg cheese- this is a semi soft Swiss style cheese that when baked in the oven has that perfect cheese pull but is still mild enough in flavor to let those onion shine through. TRUST ME! Use this cheese, it makes a huge difference in the flavor of this dip. You can find this at most grocery stores in the cheese section. I got mine from Walmart. If you really can’t find this cheese use Gruyere or Emmental cheese.
Mayonnaise – Aunt Donna always says use Hellmann’s Mayo, always! I don’t ask questions, I just do what Aunt Donna says. Use Hellmann’s!
When Aunt Donna first sent me this recipe it called for a cup of mayo but I split this into mayo and sour cream- you can do what I did OR use a full cup of full fat mayo, either way it will tase delicious!

Your onions will look like this at the start- my secret is to add in some butter and sugar to them to make them caramelize quicker. Deglaze the pan as needed by adding some water to it. Cook them low and slow for about ½ hour.
Your onions will look like this when they are done! YUM.
